The TOEFL, Test of English as a Foreign Language, is required by American institutions of higher learning as evidence of an applicant's English proficiency. The test specifically was developed to measure language skills that are required of non-native English speaking students who intend to pursue a program of undergraduate or graduate studies. Consequently, the test is oriented towards academic-related topics and campus situations.
There are three formats for the TOEFL: PBT (paper-based test), CBT (computer-based test), and iBT (Internet-based test). Test structure
Reading
Time: 60 minutes
Format: 3 passages, 12-14 questions per passage
Listening
Time: 45 minutes
Format: 2 conversations, 4 short lectures, 34 questions
Speaking
Time: 20 minutes
Format: 6 tasks
Writing
Time: 50 minutes
Format: 2 essays
Scoring
Each section of the test is scored separately from 0 to 30, and the final score is a range of 0 to 120. Scores are available on the web and sent out to the candidate and his or her selected schools 15 days after the test.
