The GRE, Graduate Record Examination, measures verbal and math skills. It is required by graduate study programs in the USA and Canada for almost all academic fields.
Test format
Verbal Section
Section time: 30 minutes
Format: 30 questions
Areas tested: grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension
Quantitative Section
Section time: 45 minutes
Format: 28 questions
Areas tested: algebra, arithmetic, geometry
Writing Assessment
Section time: 75 minutes
Format: one 45-minute essay, one 30-minute essay
Areas tested: analysis of an argument, analysis of an issue
Scoring
The verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE are scored on a range of 200 to 800. The essays are graded on a 0 to 6 scale. Test takers are given a scaled score for the total test and each section, as well as the percentile rank that shows an individual’s performance relative to other test takers at the same administration. Normally, scores are sent out to test takers and their designated schools within two weeks.
Registration
The GRE is administered during the first three weeks of every month. In order to register for the exam, obtain the GRE Registration Bulletin from the Educational Testing Service -
www.ets.org. The bulletin contains all the necessary information on registration procedures. Follow the instructions and register by phone or by fax. The test may be taken only one time per calendar month.
